As part of the Director of Guest Work Agency, Alana Kushnir’s role in leading the Serpentine Legal Lab, we have recently assisted the Serpentine Arts Technologies in the development of Brazilian artist Gabriel Massan’s ground-breaking experimental video game, exhibition and web3 project, Third World: The Bottom Dimension, powered by Tezos.

Our role involved conducting legal mentoring sessions with the artist and curators, as well as developing user-friendly T&Cs and FAQs to accompany the game and tokenization experience at a range of touch points, including within the token smart contract metadata.

THIRD WORLD: THE BOTTOM DIMENSION

Artist Gabriel Massan collaborated with Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Novíssimo Edgar and vocalist and music producer LYZZA to explore the impacts of colonialism through the lens of the Black Brazilian experience in this incredible multi-part art project.

Third World: The Bottom Dimension is an exhibition at the Serpentine where visitors can play the Third World video-game and take home tokenized video captures of their game experience, as well as a downloadable PC version to play at home.

This empowers the audience to come to the project through several different avenues, depending on their background or experience with this technology. In addition, with the support of Tezos, the artist is empowered to connect with web3 communities.

The exhibition, described as “sharing interdisciplinary approaches to worldbuilding,” will run from 23 June – 22 October at the Serpentine Gallery in London. However, the video game is available for download from June 23, all over the world.

Serpentine has fantastic resources surrounding this exhibition and the ongoing video game project. To learn more, see graphics from the game and hear from the creators, visit the Third World: The Bottom Dimension website.

THE LEGAL LAB

Kushnir’s support in the development of the Third World: The Bottom Dimension project was conducted as a part of her ongoing direction of the Legal Lab, formed as a part of Serpentine Galleries R&D Platform. The Legal Lab investigates legal issues in the art tech field, prototypes accessible legal solutions for artists and cultural institutions, and provides legal mentoring for commissioned projects. In addition, it brings together leaders from all corners of the arts and tech space for productive idea exchange through the talk series, Legal Lab Live.
